Start small, grow fast, by Yemi Adetayo

Even God willed the world, but started with Adam and Eve; but today he has the world. He could have created the world full of people, but he didn’t because he understood the law of growth very well. Take inspiration from him; start small. It’s because you haven’t started that you’re still planning to start. Once you start, you grow. Now go start this business. You will succeed!

Life is a process and we have to learn to go through it step by step. However fast you want to go, you have to learn to take baby steps. By baby steps, I mean start small. The reason your business hasn’t grown is that you haven’t started. Until you start, you cannot grow. Come to think of it, what do you need to get started? A million naira or dollars? And if you don’t have many yet, what do you do? All of the success stories are clear examples of people who decided to go for it, not caring what they didn’t have.

How many?

How Much Do You Really Need to Start Your Dream Business?

I once did a search on this topic. The question then was how much do you actually need to start with? I asked some Corp members and most of them were dreaming between 10 and 100 million naira. I preceded to ask the working class and got the same answer. Then it dawned on me what the problem was. Everyone wants to start very big. How on earth will a fresh graduate be able to manage 10 million naira when he hasn’t profitably managed 100,000 naira? I’m an apostle of big dreams and I’m still wise enough to know that small steps eventually grow to make your dreams come true.

A sole proprietorship can become a multinational

Some of the multinational companies that we have today started out as sole proprietorships. Most popular skit creators and comedians started with their phones and over time they grew beyond that. When we say that small drops of water make a huge ocean, the advice is to start small and grow fast! You don’t need an office in Victoria Island, Lekki or Ajah to get started. All you need is all you have now and what you have now is enough. I know of a PR agency that started off quite small and is now one of the top five in the industry.

Say you started your dream business 10 years ago, you would have already made headlines; but because you didn’t start, you’re still on the drawing board, 10 years after you’re supposed to have started. Nigeria still does not appreciate your contributions. Please make a firm decision to start today. Taking small steps is not just the business’s responsibility; do you want to be a writer? Start writing in your church bulletin. That’s how I started. Whatever you want to do, learn to start small, even if you make mistakes, you won’t be devastated. I once read the inspiring story of a man who wanted to start a PR consultancy when he couldn’t find a job. He wrote down the steps to follow. He went to the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) to do a postgraduate course in public relations. He also learned printing processes around the same time. He started as a printer. He did a lot of trekking in the beginning and was then able to raise the start-up capital. The printing that produced the start-up capital eventually became part of the services provided by his business. Suppose he didn’t take the first step, he would probably still be looking for a job.

What problems do you solve?

Getting started is all about making the decision to start and start small; the first step is to determine what resources you have. What is your solution package? The most important success factor in any type of business is the problem you solve. So, dear friend, what problem do you really want to solve? Can you solve it? If you really can’t fix the problem, go learn how to fix the problem properly. This knowledge will set you apart. That’s what Coscharis started with. You cannot be an exception. It is interesting that you may not know how to solve the problem, but you need to find those who can and will, you will have to market your services and get them to solve the problem as technical and contract personnel.

The second foundation of business growth is the understanding that businesses exist to solve customer problems. Cars, executive offices are for printing. Since you don’t have any money yet, use your home address, and if your home address doesn’t look good, use your friend’s address. As your customer base increases, your cash flow will also increase. You will definitely grow with hard work. First get a website and over time a business office.

There is a church growth consultant here in Nigeria who has no church but has grown so big and recognized as the number one church growth consultant in Africa. He did not go to any secular university. He went through all the theological training and didn’t stop until he got his doctorate. His English wasn’t very polite when he started; his writing skills were not good when he started. He has become very good at what he does today. He has now written over 50 books which are sold worldwide. He even writes for national newspapers. He is now a much sought after church growth consultant and has raised others like him over the years. His name is Akin-John. He is Nigerian and has gone far because he started. What are your excuses? If you evaluate them well, you will find that what you have is enough to start with.
