Oerlikon opens laser coating center

Oerlikon Metco Coating Services The new Laser Coating Service Center (MCS) is fully operational in Huntersville, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte.

As previously reported, Oerlikon planned to expand its existing world-class offering additive manufacturing plant include laser coating and thermal spraying services; thus implementing a super service center under one roof and allowing the company to easily offer printing and coating parts.

Laser coating services are now fully operational at this facility with the ability to offer OD and ID coatings, as well as laser curing, pre- and post-machining and inspection services.

The plant is equipped to handle a wide range of parts, with a maximum part weight of 15,000 lbs (6,800 kg), a maximum part length of 480 “(12,192 mm). Outside diameters up to 96 “(2438mm), as well as inside diameters from 2” to 120 “(50.8mm to 3048mm) can be processed.

The experienced staff at the Huntersville site and the company’s long history of developing laser coating solutions will serve the aerospace, energy and automotive markets, among others.

The substantial investment at the Huntersville plant, as well as a recent significant investment in new, state-of-the-art laser coating equipment at the company’s plant in Wohlen, Switzerland, underscores the importance of laser coating in the strategy comprehensive coating service. In addition, the company continues to develop new materials optimized for the laser plating process.

In addition to the expansion of laser coating in Huntersville, thermal spray coating equipment is currently being installed and is expected to be operational at the same location by the end of the first quarter of 2022.

Oerlikon Metco improves surfaces through a wide range of surface technologies, equipment, materials, services, specialized machining services and components. Surface technologies such as thermal spraying, laser coating and laser curing improve performance and increase efficiency and reliability.

Oerlikon AM provides additive and conventional manufacturing solutions with metals and polymers. The broad portfolio of solutions offered range from co-development and contract manufacturing of high-quality, performance-optimized components, through research and development, to the production of the company’s own metal powders for 3D printing.
