In the face of record climate crises, conscious consumers and increasing regulation, companies today must represent more than the products they sell.

On World Earth Day celebrated on April 22, 2022, Noel D’cunha speaks with Haim Levit, SVP and GM, Industrial Printing at HP Indigo, about sustainable printing. We’ve entered a new era of responsible printing — and the world is watching, says Levit.

If 2021 was about reversing the course of the pandemic, 2022 is about adapting to its new realities. The pressure on sustainability is increasing. Demands for improved environmental practices and sustainable products are growing, with 60% of consumers saying they have changed their shopping habits to become more sustainable and 74% of consumers are now willing to pay more for sustainable packaging. (1).

As we move away from the “take, make, throw away” linear production model, the world’s biggest brands are embracing a more circular economy, not just because it’s good for the environment, but because the market – and Increasingly, regulators – are demanding this.

So where does this take you? For PSPs and print converters, the pressure is on to reduce the carbon footprint and turn waste into valuable resources. As consumers and brands look to printers to help earn their status as good corporate citizens, sustainability isn’t just a differentiator – it’s key to future profit.

It pays to be sustainable.

Go digital
Digital printing is, by nature, more durable than traditional printing. It reduces waste through the elimination of plates and cylinders, reduces the physical distance between production and customers and reduces emissions. It’s fast and flexible, meaning businesses can meet new demands for customization, premium products and just-in-time printing with shorter print runs too.

In fact, digital printing can reduce supply chain waste by up to 26% and reduce carbon footprint by 65-80% (2).

But responsible printing isn’t just about waste. PSPs and processors need to look at the entire lifecycle of their product, including its supply chain, function, marketability and recyclability, to achieve the positive social and environmental outcomes that consumers are now demanding. . It should be circular, from all angles.

This is where HP Indigo can help.

Leading a new era of sustainable printing
There is a big difference between printing and printing with HP Indigo. For decades, HP Indigo has been driving sustainability through innovations that minimize waste, maximize efficiency, and streamline systems to make printing more sustainable. In 2016, EarthShift Global LLC confirmed the advantages of HP Indigo digital presses over traditional printing methods (3).

As the world’s leading consumer goods brands commit to ambitious goals, such as 100% recyclable and reusable packaging by 2025, they are turning to HP Indigo to meet their needs.

Reduce, recycle and reuse
Protecting future generations from the devastating effects of an atmospheric carbon overload requires a collective effort to move towards carbon neutrality. A simple step companies can take to complete this program is to partner with HP Indigo, since all presses are manufactured carbon neutral. In less than a decade, HP Indigo has reduced over 170 million kg/CO₂eq through offset projects, which equates to approximately 6.8 million trees per year (4).

HP Indigo presses are also compatible with a wide range of media options ranging from FSC-certified papers to biodegradable and compostable films that help reduce the negative impact of economic activities on biodiversity. The HP Indigo customer can offer the right print media to meet the increasing sustainability demands of brand owners. PSPs and converters around the world are also reducing their carbon footprint through initiatives such as the HP Certified Pre-Owned Press program and the free take-back program, which involves the reuse and recovery of supplies. In 2020, HP Indigo reused and refurbished 138 tons of binary ink developer components (49% of the total quantity shipped) and recovered 1,416 tons of supplies for recycling. (5).

Each HP Indigo press maximizes resource efficiency by reducing waste and saving energy. This, combined with Liquid Electrophotography (LEP) technology and ElectroInk, results in maximum press productivity, reducing media waste and energy consumption through laser precision at the highest speeds. This technology is also becoming more and more efficient. The HP Indigo 100K 5-Series Digital Press uses 20% less energy and produces 7% less supplies waste than 2-Series presses (6).

Responsible management
HP Indigo doesn’t just deliver inks and presses that comply with environmental regulations, it leads with purpose. Every part of the company aims to produce a positive social and environmental impact.

For more than 15 years, the HP Indigo Environmental Forum has led ambitious and comprehensive environmental initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste while creating an ethical, sustainable and resilient supply chain and advancing a more diverse and inclusive industry. From integrating electric vehicles into the transport fleet to amplifying voices that are not always heard,

HP Indigo empowers partners and employees to have lasting impact.

Win favors with the right approach
Adopting a more sustainable approach isn’t just good for the environment, it’s good for business. But as consumers become more aware of corporate greenwashing tactics, you need a partner with a reputation you can trust.

HP Indigo goes beyond compliance with regulatory requirements to meet voluntary standards that raise the bar. Each press sets a new standard for sustainable printing, from reducing resource consumption to closing the loop of the circular economy. HP Indigo has been leading the environmental charge from the very beginning: implementing rigorous standards and certifications, building trust through transparency, and working with the entire supply chain to enable more sustainable results.

When you partner with HP Indigo, you partner with decades of industry-leading investment and innovation. In a world where customers demand sustainable solutions, only HP Indigo can help you deliver and grow.
