Their printing presses lasted for decades. A machine was built in Cleveland, Ohio in 1898. The equipment isn’t just for show. “About 20 years ago there was a resurgence in the printing press. It became more of an art form.” said Payson. This printing press process is the repeated direct printing of ink onto a raised surface. Even today’s most high-tech digital printers, she says, can’t quite replicate it.

“Now it’s new. There’s a whole new, younger generation that’s falling in love with letterpress and foil stamping,” Payson said.

Laura Marr is strictly a custom order boutique and boasts a notable list of clients, including model Cindy Crawford, comedian Tiny Fey and Oscar winners. Creating the most modern printing materials using what some might consider the most antiquated methods, the company even continues to mix its own ink.

All pun intended, Payson says it’s all about creating the right “impressions”.

“To get that look you have to have the old machines, there’s nothing new on the market that can do that.” she says.
