German packaging converter Arwed Löseke integrates plate production in-house as a more sustainable business solution

Fifth-generation family business invests in water wash plate technology for faster plate availability and lower carbon footprint

Tokyo, Japan & Brussels, Belgium. Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in the development of flexographic photopolymer plates, today announced that German packaging converter Arwed Löseke Paper Processing and Printing GmbH, recently upgraded its printing operations with a flexographic printing press BOBST M6 LED hybrid using Asahi AWP™-DEW CleanPrint water washable printing plates and UV inks. Löseke is a fifth-generation family business with a large machine park, including a 10-color rotogravure and a 10-color CI flexo press. The company was founded in Hildesheim in 1883, has approximately 250 employees and is currently managed by managing director and owner Ariane Löseke.

In addition to the new Bobst M6 inline flexo press, they also acquired an Asahi AWP™ 4835P water-wash plate processor and an ESKO CDI XPS plate imaging system to bring flexo platemaking in-house . In addition to eliminating the use of solvent-washable printing plates, the company is also able to offer customers more flexibility and faster turnaround times without sacrificing quality, including new applications such than adhesive labels.

In addition, Löseke has invested in new flexo platemaking equipment, with the aim of in-house platemaking. This process was outsourced in the past, and the technological transformation has allowed them to produce plates just in time for the job and generate less waste in the press room thanks to the virtual elimination of the need for press stops to plate cleaning.

The integration of in-house flexo platemaking enables better control of lead times and plate quality for Arwed Löseke. “Even if we have to replace a plate during the press,” says Spitzer, “we can produce a new one in less than an hour, much faster than with outsourced, solvent-based platemaking. We have communicated all of these value propositions to our clients, and they very much appreciate the types of investments we make on their behalf.

Ms. Löseke concludes: “The biggest benefit of these investments for me as a business owner is the durability of the AWP™-DEW water wash plates. Additionally, solvent-based systems require more space because they require extraction systems to deal with VOCs. It is therefore practically impossible and very expensive to move the system.
