Black Buffalo 3D wants to reduce the carbon footprint of construction through 3D printing

0

Black Buffalo 3D is a company specializing in additive manufacturing for the construction industry. She has been working for several years on the development of 3D printers and materials for a demanding market, whose environmental impact is increasingly negative. If you follow the news of 3D printing, you are aware of all the advantages that 3D technologies bring to construction: cost reduction, reduction in the amount of concrete used, reduction in labor, greater geometric freedom, etc. There are still many challenges to overcome. , but recent innovations show that we are on the right track. And just to understand these latest developments and their potential impact on this industry, we caught up with Michael Woods, the CEO/COO of Black Buffalo 3D Corporation. The company strives to reduce the environmental footprint of construction by using custom concrete extrusion technology.

3DN: Can you introduce yourself and how you discovered AM?

Michael Woods

Black Buffalo 3D is a subsidiary of HN Inc., formerly Hyundai BS&C, based in South Korea. They have been involved in the development of traditional construction and the creation of smart infrastructure for almost a decade and have seen the potential in the application of AM technology to construction projects. Several years ago, they expanded their construction business by acquiring a construction 3D printing manufacturer – Hisys.

Black Buffalo 3D was established in 2020 as a global accelerator for this business. Since then, we have grown with our own factory in the USA and dedicated R&D teams in equipment design, materials science and sustainability. Our team also invested nearly a year, working with ICC-ES to rewrite the AC-509 criteria to include multi-story 3D printed walls and partnered with leading cement companies to perfect our exclusive concrete ink. We are also working to go beyond waste reduction and test more durable structural inks for an even greater impact in transforming construction into a greener industry.

Our approach to the market has been cautious and calculated with a focus on proving the viability of our 3D printed construction in a way that will grow our business and create greater opportunities for businesses, countries and companies in create much-needed infrastructure more efficiently with less environment. impact than traditional methods.

3DN: What is the main mission of Black Buffalo 3D?

Black Buffalo 3D will innovate and lead the industry in sustainable building solutions. We hope to one day see a 3D printer or 3D printed components on every job site the same way you often see piles of wood, cement trucks, or other types of heavy machinery. We’d love to see 3D construction printers modernize construction methods and help promote a greener, more automated approach to construction, whether in the form of bridges, tunnels, affordable housing, or better disaster preparedness. disasters. We will support the effective creation of this infrastructure globally through education, sales, distribution and training on our 3D construction printers to create a new profession and more opportunities for industry veterans. and the next generation of builders.

3DN: Why is it wise to use 3D printing in construction?

3D construction printing allows operators to print the components they need on demand. Whether it’s an entire building or traditionally pre-engineered or modular parts, contractors can significantly reduce environmental impact and efficiency by using 3D printing at or near the project site. There is so much waste on construction sites due to excess materials, numerous emissions from delivery vehicles, and supply chain and logistics challenges that can be avoided with the 3D printing. The only waste at our print sites is cleaning excess material from this machine when a print job is complete. We are already looking at ways to completely eliminate waste by using the extra material from the delivery system to create decorative pieces. The sustainable nature of the construction 3D printer combined with the efficiencies will allow more projects to be completed with less environmental impact. Black Buffalo 3D construction printers will help build better and faster than traditional construction methods.

3DN: Can you tell us more about the process, materials and software used by Black Buffalo 3D?

Our printers feature a gantry design that allows us to print larger footprints and with greater accuracy and speed than other types of 3D printers. Currently we use a proprietary cement-based ink that has undergone rigorous testing against adverse conditions to ensure it is safe for almost any environment. It will be sold and available through our distribution partners as Black Buffalo 3D Cement ink in the near future as one of our many offerings. Our R&D team is also partnering with several companies and working to create new durable structural and non-structural inks that can be used for different applications. We will know more in the next 6-8 months. Our software and controller are also customized and included with each printer.

3DN: What challenges do you still encounter?

We’ve been working for over a year on transitioning our prototypes into commercially viable products and make sure to test them outdoors in real-world conditions. Now that we’re there, we can reflect on how supply chain and logistics challenges forced us to slow down our schedule and get creative to keep up. At this point, we are investing heavily in our upcoming printer models and mass-producing our cement ink to make it available worldwide. We are fortunate to have great partners who will help us with manufacturing and distribution, but currently our biggest challenge is to create enough printers and cement ink to meet demand.

3DN: What are the future plans for Black Buffalo 3D?

Black Buffalo 3D will be making more information about its printers and projects available to the public in the coming months. Between our sister companies in South Korea and our team in the United States, we are investing heavily in the future of construction 3D printing to make affordable homes and 3D printed infrastructure more accessible to everyone. If you are a qualified builder, developer, government, educational institution or NGO interested in purchasing a 3D construction printer, please contact us and follow us on social media.
