The robotics team from Beal City’s first robotics competition is heading to a competition at HH Dow High School in Midland this weekend.

“We hope to be able to qualify for the playoffs of the competition,” said Beal City Middle and High School robotics coach Kathleen Rau. “We will be competing again April 8-10, 2022.”

The high school First Robotics Competition (FRC) team was established in 2016 and the middle school First Tech Challenge (FTC) team was established in 2018. There are approximately 15 children in the FRC team and 12 in the FTC team.

“Beal City has kindergarten to high school robotics and each team has a season where they design a robot to compete,” Rau said.

For competitions, FIRST engineers will design the game which will then be released in a launch event. Teams will design a robot to play the game in a match play competition.

The team has three sub-teams which consist of the construction team, the programming team, and the marketing team.

“The construction team made most of the parts for the robot this year, using grant funds we received to purchase equipment to build the robot,” Rau said. “The construction team is guided by its construction mentors Nathan Finnerty, Nick Finnerty, Kenny Myer and Stacey Fox. The programming team programs the robot in Java under the direction of its mentor Bill Scott. The marketing team designs or marks logos and has done several things such as message boards, creating web pages, 3D printing competition awards, mostly with me.

Recruiting events for both teams usually take place in the spring.
